How Fast can you stop?

Estimate how fast, in seconds, you can stop when you..

  1. are driving 30 mph
  2. are driving 55 mph
  3. are traveling on an icy road
  4. drive in the dark with your low beams on
  5. travel on gravel
  6. have a new car
  7. have a heavy, loaded truck with a trailer full of cattle
What are the different variables you need to be concerned with? Why?

  11. If you are driving in bad conditions like icy roads you should go pretty slow and be prepared to stop early because it will take longer to finally stop. Since you are driving in the dark you should be careful because it is more difficult to see and since you are riding behind another car on an icy road you should stay a good distance away form it so you don't cause an accident.

  12. you can stop if you got good brakes if not you will stop and y might hit the person in front of you but if you are going 55mph you can slow down and stop going that fast and keep it under speed and have your car under speed.

the weight of your car and your load you also need to think about how fast you are traveling and the condition of the road you are traveling on. or in other words you need to be considering the surface of the road

  17. When going 30 mpg, it would take maybe 10sec to stop, going 55 mpg, it would take maybe 15-25sec, traveling on an icy road, it would take maybe 30 sec, the trailer fill with cattle, I would be concerned with them hitting the back of the trailer and getting out, them getting out and causing an accident.
